How To Starve The Beast

I'm sure you've already read this post: if not, please go and do it now, it will give you the background to this one.

Below, you will find the information you need to complain to ScottsihPower about the environmental levy on your electricity and/or gas bill. The levies have been applied since 2002, probably without your knowledge. Certainly, SP  have never gone out of their way to inform us consumers of the extra money they were extracting in order to help them pay for the government's heroic (in their mind) and costly (in our pocket) struggle against the Carbon Monster.

It's interesting that the Bishop Hill blog has today carried a story in which they speculate that the Department for Enenrgy and Climate Change is pressurising energy companies to conceal their extra charges to their consumers for "green taxes".

ScottishPower should at least be given some credit for splitting out the extra charges they are taking out of your bank to pay for Chris Huhne's mad ambition. The figures differ depending on whether you are an electricity-only customer - 11%; a gas-only customer - 7%; or a dual-fuel customer - 9%. Of these figures, 5% (that is 5 of the 7/9/11%) is for VAT, whihch is just another government tax on staying alive. So, depending on your supply situation, 2%, 4% or 6% of your energy bill has been appropriated without your permission to fund the rush to cover our country in great ugly windmills. And  here in South Lanarkshire, that's something we know a bit about.

The supplemental charges - 2%, 4% and 6% - look suspiciously like rounded guesses rather than carefully calcluated minimal charges. The 9% charge for dual-fuel is half-way between the two and at first glance would appear to be a fair average between the two. However, as we explained in the original post, ScottishPower is the spiritual heir of the SSEB, which was an electricity generator, so it would be fair to expect the majority of their customers still to be either electricity or dual-fuel. This raises the average bill supplement.

Also, why is the electricity charge higher than gas anyway? Since SP say that this is to fund their general "renewables" programme why is one fuel being loaded preferentially?

Back to the point of this post: please get in touch with ScottishPOwer and ask for your money back.
